Does It Really Snow in Ethiopia?

Yes, snow can occur in Ethiopia’s highest mountains, but it is uncommon. It should be treated as a possible mountain encounter rather than something to expect on a trip.

Where can snow occur?

Documented locations include the Sanetti Plateau and surrounding peaks in the Bale Mountains. Tullu Dimtu, about 4,377 m high, is the highest peak in Bale. A conservation report prepared with the Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority also describes snow and ice on the highest parts of the Simien Mountains.

These mountain observations should not be used as a forecast for Addis Ababa or the rest of Ethiopia.

When does it snow, and how long does it last?

Research on Bale describes rare snowfall during the wet seasons, with fresh snow usually melting within hours or days. It separately records frequent nighttime ground frost during the dry season, roughly November to February. Those findings do not establish a dependable season for seeing snow.

What is the difference between snow, frost and hail?

Snow falls from clouds as ice crystals or flakes. Frost develops on cold surfaces. Hail falls as lumps or balls of ice, generally during thunderstorms. All three can make the ground look white, so a photograph alone may not identify what happened.

What should mountain visitors prepare for?

Bring warm layers, waterproof outerwear and suitable trekking shoes. Check a forecast for your actual route and ask your guide about recent conditions, trail access and overnight temperatures before departure. Cold or wet conditions deserve preparation even without snow.
